Latest Information:

PureWorks One-step Disinfectant is an EPA-Registered disinfectant for use on a variety of hard non-porous surfaces and is effective against many pathogens including Avian Influenza.

Avian Influenza has caused alarm throughout Asia and raised concerns in other countries where migrating birds may be found. The Avian virus is quite contagious among birds, especially chickens, ducks, and turkeys. Poultry farmers in the U.S. are watching the spread of avian influenza in Asia and Europe. This virus has also been nicknamed “Bird Flu” and although the risk of transmission from bird to human is a concern, there has been no reported human to human transmission. The risk to humans is limited to exposure to infected birds and to date has not been reported to be a problem in the U.S.

There are different strains (subtypes) of the avian influenza virus, and although there are no EPA registered products in the USA which specifically claim effectiveness against the newest strain (H5N1) EPA believes that currently registered products with an avian influenza claim will also be effective against the H5N1 strain (when used as directed on the product label). At this time, however, EPA prohibits claims against H5N1 for any disinfectant product.

PureWorks One-step Disinfectant is registered for use on poultry farms, where disinfection of the farms’ facilities can help prevent the spread of the Avian Influenza Virus. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides guidance for the disinfection of poultry facilities. (See USDA's Sanitation Performance Standards Compliance Guide, Sec. 381.58-381.60 for the guidelines.) Other locations where hard surface disinfectant activity against Avian Influenza and other animal viruses may be of concern are veterinary clinics and zoos, where healthy birds could be exposed to birds that may have been infected with the virus. For appropriate use of PureWorks One Step Disinfectant please refer to the product label.
